About our program
Mission
WEIRD Girl is an after-school mentorship program for girls ages 8–18 in the Philadelphia area. We are redefining the word weird by giving girls confidence and helping them embrace what makes them unique.
Meetings
Day: Wednesday
Location: Zoom
Time: TBA
Due to the on going Covid-19 restrictions, all sessions are currently being held via Zoom.
Mentorship
We are intentional about creating an inclusive environment for our girls. It's imperative that we empower all girls regardless of race, religion, or cultural background. We discuss topics like self-love, internal beauty, etiquette, financial literacy, self-discipline, jealousy, leadership, positive debating, bullying, acts of kindness, entrepreneurship, politics and setting goals.
Education
Education is very important. Our goal is to create an ecosystem of support that will guide our mentees from elementary school through college, and ultimately into corporate America and their own businesses. We're proud to say that 95% of our girls are now honor roll students! The other 5% are not that far behind!
Experiences
Classroom learning is required, but it's even more fun when our girls have opportunities to travel and meet other young girls throughout the nation. Learning new skills, speaking about culture differences, and meeting girls that possibly share their same struggles can also create a safe space, and develop beautiful friendships.
Meet our founder
Arnetta Williams started WEIRD Girl Mentoring in 2018 after having a very heartfelt conversation with an 11-year-old girl who was being bullied by her classmates. She was being called ‘weird’ because she refused to behave in a manner that would lead her into trouble. Arnetta was determined to change the trajectory of the word, ‘weird.’ After noticing the lack of after-school programs for young girls in the Philadelphia/Delaware County areas, she started the program to provide a safe space for middle and high schoolers to explore their identities, gain confidence, and learn skills to empower them now and in their futures. Her girls meet with her once a week for lessons, mentorship, and support. Arnetta’s mission is for every girl to love herself and have self respect, while also knowing that being called ‘weird’ is absolutely okay!
